Profile Evaluation & Feeback request - Pankaj Agrawal

Hi Sir,
Request you to please evaluate my profile. Also, please suggest if I should target applications in R1 or R2.

Pankaj Agrawal [M28]

Education:
IIT Kharagpur (2010-15), B. Arch: 8.2/10 CGPA

  • Foreign Internship (6 months): CPG Corporation, Singapore
  • Inter IIT Badminton Captain: Led the team to win several medals in National intercollegiate tournaments.

12th: 81.8%
10th: 89.8%

Work-Experience:
6 years+ in a single company, across different functions, roles & countries, with 4 promotions. [OYO]

  • Ops Manager: Joined a 1.5-year-old startup then, built processes for Operations, front-ending to problem solve customers and merchants experience. (1 Yr)
  • Demand Manager: Built B2B Sales process, and generated highest sales in the country (among 1000+ people). Top sales performer of the country. (1 Yr)
  • KAM Head: Started 'Key Account Management' function for B2b sales, generating $30M revenue annually. Building team from scratch, I headed a 30 member team to manage India's top 100 Corporate accounts. (2 Yrs)
  • Program Manager (Location: Shanghai, China- largest market): Built and managed different revenue streams under CEO China. (1 Yr)
  • Program Manager: Under President- International, implementing products across key international geographies including US, UK, China, ME, LATAM & SEA. (1 Yr)

Extra-curriculars:

  • Volunteering in teaching underprivileged 6-12 yrs age (1 Yr).
  • National level Badminton & State level Chess player

MBA goals: Career accelerator & leadership

Target Schools: M7

GMAT Score: I have been preparing (self) for almost a year now. First attempt (15 Jul'20): 660 (Q50 V29). Targeting 730+ (By Sep-mid).

Questions/Suggestions:

  1. What chance do I stand for M7 if I apply in R2 this year? Would I miss a chance if I do not apply in R1? (I wish I could apply in R1. But, improving my Verbal score will require a month's effort at least, and managing application process for R1 deadlines will be a rush.)

  2. I understand I belong to an over-represented group (Indian IT Male Engineer), does my 'B.Arch' degree help me stand-out?

  3. Anything I should do to add brownie points to my profile for R2 applications?

Thank you

Sure @Pankaj_Agrawal happy to share my 2 cents smile

Solid undergrad brand name with good GPA. Strong international exposure in Singapore, I'm sure there will be some unique experiences there that can be used as stories for applications. Good leadership experience as IIT Badminton Captain, is this something you also did during school and that you also pursue now? That would make this much more stronger. Need to bring out the teamwork / leadership aspects you learnt on Badminton court and how they apply to corporate setting.

OYO is a strong brand. You have a solid growth story at OYO with four promotions and well-rounded exposure across functions and countries. As a 2015 grad, you will have seven years of experience when you start MBA in fall '22. Your experience is on higher end as need to now start defending in front of the AdCom why still a full-time MBA makes sense and not a part-time MBA. Also you might be bit overqualified for a lot of standard post-MBA on-campus opportunities. So take this application year very seriously and consider this as make-or-break year for your applications.

Extra-curriculars:

Volunteering in teaching underprivileged 6-12 yrs age (1 Yr).
National level Badminton & State level Chess player

I like the consistency with Badminton involvement throughout. Need to dig-out some strong stories from that. Volunteering helps and will give us additional firepower for applications!

MBA goals: Career accelerator & leadership

Target Schools: M7

GMAT Score: I have been preparing (self) for almost a year now. First attempt (15 Jul'20): 660 (Q50 V29). Targeting 730+ (By Sep-mid).

Aim 750+. You definitely improve your Verbal score drastically soon.

Questions/Suggestions:

What chance do I stand for M7 if I apply in R2 this year? Would I miss a chance if I do not apply in R1? (I wish I could apply in R1. But, improving my Verbal score will require a month's effort at least, and managing application process for R1 deadlines will be a rush.)

R1 is definitely recommended as class is entirely empty to higher chance of Admit and Scholarship. Also allows you to stagger applications across R1 & R2 and get some feedback from AdCom on R1 apps i.e. are you getting called for interviews. This is a way where you can do both R1 and Verbal prep in parallel. Please get in touch with me.

I understand I belong to an over-represented group (Indian IT Male Engineer), does my 'B.Arch' degree help me stand-out?

Not really because of your similar exposure ti any other Indian IT Male Engineer at OYO. If you were designing buildings it could've been different. We can try to highlight a different career narrative though that could make you stand out.

Anything I should do to add brownie points to my profile for R2 applications?

Right now your 100% focus should be putting in some R1 applications and improving your Verbal score

Hope this helps smile
